Supporting Communities
Having called Whatcom County home for 21 years and graduating from Western Washington University, I, Mike Cullum, am running for County Council with a deep well of experience in education and community service.
My career has centered on supporting students and families, and my work on school bonds and levies has given me a strong understanding of public service. My dedication to our community is also reflected in my time on the Civil Service Commission and in the Citizens Academy.
My goal as your Councilmember is to give everyone a voice, create opportunities for all, and ensure every resident feels valued, because I believe public service, just like education, should always prioritize hope, fairness, and community.
Give Everyone a Voice
-
I am committed to ensuring that our communities are safe, welcoming places for everyone. That means collaborating to ensure our EMS and law enforcement agencies have the resources they need to support our community effectively. Investing in emergency services and building trust and strong partnerships for maintaining public safety in our neighborhoods.
Why this matters: Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home and community. When safety and trust go hand in hand, neighborhoods thrive.

I will work to expand behavioral health services, strengthen early intervention and prevention efforts, and support programs that help individuals and families get the care they need, when they need it. Expanding resources in both schools and across the county to assist students, families, and individuals facing behavioral health challenges. Early support and intervention can prevent deeper struggles into adulthood, and ongoing counseling and treatment options are vital to reducing the negative impacts of behavioral health concerns.
Why this matters: I’ve seen firsthand how mental health impacts families and students. When people get the help they need, lives are changed and communities grow stronger.
-
Working to ensure every resident has a stable place to live. I support balanced policies that protect both tenants and landlords, promoting a unified approach to affordable housing that benefits those seeking reasonable living conditions as well as the property owners who provide housing opportunities.
Why this matters: A stable home is the foundation for individuals and families, offering stability, comfort, and a place to create memories. Without it, it’s hard for families and individuals to build a better future.
-
I will prioritize a budget that reflects funding essential services, supporting our workforce, and investing in the future for long-term sustainability.
Why this matters: Supporting our county workforce ensures we can meet today’s needs without shortchanging tomorrow.
